Solar panels in Utrecht
PVGIS climate data puts Utrecht at roughly 991 kWh per kWp each year, so a typical 6 kWp roof makes around 5,947 kWh. Utrecht stopped its duurzaamheidslening via SVn for measures such as solar panels: applications have not been possible since 1 July 2026. Two verified local rules and their sources are listed below. No other city we cover in the Netherlands has a lower yield than Utrecht. For comparison, Rotterdam reaches 1,000. Using 70% of the power at home instead of 30% moves payback from 12.5 to 6.7 years. Output peaks in May (745 kWh) and bottoms out in December (167 kWh). On our model, the system saves about EUR 765 in year one and pays back in 12.5 years.

- Best month: May (745 kWh). Weakest: December (167 kWh), a 4.5x difference.
- May, June, July produce 37.1% of the year; January, November, December produce 10.1%.
- Year-to-year variation: about 277 kWh (4.7%, one standard deviation).
- Sunlight reaching the panels: 1,272 kWh per m² a year.

Municipal duurzaamheidslening closed
Utrecht stopped its duurzaamheidslening via SVn for measures such as solar panels: applications have not been possible since 1 July 2026. The municipality refers homeowners to the national Warmtefonds loan instead.

How Utrecht compares
Utrecht ranks 3 of 3 for yield among the cities we model in the Netherlands, and 36 of 41 across every country on Solar Figures. Within one country the prices are the same, so a payback gap between these cities comes from sunshine alone.
| City | kWh per kWp / yr | Payback (EUR) |
|---|---|---|
| Rotterdam | 1,000 | 12.4 yrs |
| Amsterdam | 992 | 12.5 yrs |
| Utrecht | 991 | 12.5 yrs |
| National reference point (country page) | 993 | 12.5 yrs |
Closest yield abroad: London (988 kWh per kWp), Cologne (1,003 kWh per kWp), Antwerp (1,005 kWh per kWp).
What moves the payback in Utrecht
Power you use yourself is worth the retail price (€0.27 per kWh); power you export earns €0.07. So the share you use at home, by running appliances in daylight or adding a battery, changes the payback. The system cost stays the same in every row (a battery would add to it).
| Used at home | Year-1 savings | Payback |
|---|---|---|
| 20% | €648 | 15.2 yrs |
| 30% (our default) | €765 | 12.5 yrs |
| 50% | €1,001 | 8.4 yrs |
| 70% | €1,236 | 6.7 yrs |
- Net system cost after incentives: €8,100 for 6 kWp.
- Incentive modelled: No capital grant; 0% VAT embedded in price. Net metering (salderingsregeling) ENDS 1 Jan 2027..
- 25-year net savings at our default: €18,385.
Best panel angle in Utrecht
At latitude 52.09°N, PVGIS finds the fixed tilt and direction that maximise yearly output. Our figures use a common 35° roof; the table shows what the optimum adds.
| Setup | Tilt | Facing | kWh per kWp / yr |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard roof (used on this page) | 35° | south | 991 |
| PVGIS optimum | 39° | south (179°) | 993 |
The optimum adds 0.2% a year over the standard roof in Utrecht. Most of a roof's value comes from its direction: a roof facing away from the equator loses far more than a few degrees of tilt.
